A little bribery goes a long way...

A couple of days ago, I set a large bowl of candy (hersheys, suckers, etc) on the island in the kitchen. The goal was to remove all of this from the cabinets and pantry to rid the house of it. I thought by setting it there, visitors would grab some and it would go faster. Brayden has been eyeing the candy each time he walks by as if it were the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden. Finally, he asked me what it was... Now, before I reveal my response..., let me preface it with this... I have always been one of those moms that thought "i will never bribe my children with candy... there are other things besides food like stickers, toys, and books to use as rewards". uh... yea... right... Because apparently when I responded I was in potty training depression... this is what came out:
"It's potty candy. Every time you go pee-pee or poo-poo in the potty, we'll come get a piece of candy" (Ok, so I've slightly altered my aforementionned 'I will never' statement-- but when you are so desperate to see the oh so faint light at the end of the never ending potty training tunnel, you'll try anything)
The response seemed to apease him but not spur him into action ... darn the luck. Well, this afternoon, something clicked. We had just returned home from lunch with Tony, and Brayden was getting ready for a nap when he mentionned that he was still hungry. Offering the left over brocoli from lunch, I assumed he would refuse and go take his nap. Instead, he said... "no, I want that" pointing to the candy bowl. He was already diaper-less (don't ask) at the time so I told him that he'd have to go to the potty before he could have that candy. Off we went. And he did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got candy... and he did it again... got candy... for a total of 5 times!!! In about the span of 7 minutes...
So now, I have a peeing toddler that is way to strung out on sugar to take a nap. Who cares. He did it!!!! I can see the light... ..... kind of.

I hear ya on the bribery! I too thought I would never use candy only to find myself throwing it at Trey to get him to do things. i.e. if you sit in the chair at mommies doctors appt. I will give you a sucker after...or...(he was very afraid of sunday school for a while so) if you go into your class mommy has gum for you when she comes back to get you. He could care less about stickers and ballons, etc. All he wanted was gum so I caved and it was worth it to not shove the screaming kicking child into the room with the other kids. Love the preschool pics outfit very stylin!
